The Clinch Bend Chapter was organized
on December 13, 1945, and was confirmed by the National
Board of Management on May 15, 1946, under the name Samuel
Whitney, ancestor of the organizing regent Mrs. Lawrence
George Henry. None of the eighteen charter members are currently members. On January 31, 1953, with the need for
wartime security over, the name was changed to Clinch
Bend Chapter for local identity. A large bend in the
Clinch River provides protection on three sides of Oak
Ridge and was a key factor in selecting the site for
the atomic installations in World War II. |
